2000 Toyota Tacoma Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to service and repair the leaf spring on 2000 Toyota Tacoma?
A: You should begin the leaf spring service and repair process on models RZN191L-TRPDKAB, RZN196L-CRPDKAB, and VZN195L-CRPDKAB through body support with safety stands and lowering the axle housing while releasing leaf spring tension. Start the service by removing the rear wheel then tightening it to 110 Nm torque which equals 1,150 kgf-cm and 83 ft. lbs. Vehicle support begins with disconnecting the parking brake cable followed by removing the bolt from the shock absorber used for contacting the 4WD and PreRunner at torques of 71 Nm (730 kgf-cm, 53 ft. lbs.) or 26 Nm (260 kgf-cm, 19 ft. lbs.) respectively for 2WD and 4WD units. Move forward by taking off the 4 U-bolt mounting nuts and washers before removing the spring seat and U-bolts. Install them with a torque of 123 Nm (1,250 kgf-cm, 90 ft. lbs.) while making sure all U-bolts under the spring seat have equal lengths during this process. The spring bumper needs removal during theLeaf spring removal for 4WD and PreRunner. The leaf spring removal process starts by applying 157 Nm torque to remove the bolt and washer and nut and then continuing with 92 Nm torque for shackle pin mounting nuts before eliminating the shackle pin and plate together with the leaf spring. Special Service Tool: 09550-10013 (09252-10010, 09553-10010) and a press allow the correct installation of eye bushings for 2WD (except PreRunner). To install the spring clip begin by opening it with a combination of chisel hammer and vise for the center bolt removal before drilling off the rivet head then installing a new rivet to assemble. Position the spring center bolt at 44 Nm (450 kgf-cm, 33 ft. lbs.) torque before bending the spring clip to its proper form. The 2WD (except PreRunner) requires torqueing the spring bumper to 29 Nm (300 kgf-cm, 22 ft. lbs.). The installation process follows exactly the opposite order of steps used for removal.
