2000 Toyota RAV4 Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the water pump on 2000 Toyota RAV4?
A: You must begin water pump servicing by taking away the RH engine under cover and draining engine coolant before removing the timing belt. The service requires disconnecting the lower radiator hose from water inlet while you remove timing belt tension spring as well as No. 2 idler pulley. First disconnect the crankshaft position sensor connector clamp before extracting the generator drive belt adjusting bar along with its bolt. Remove the water pump cover assembly first by disassembling all 2 nuts connected to the water bypass pipe and the 3 specified bolts. You must disconnect the water pump cover from the water bypass pipe before removing the water pump assembly with its accompanying gasket and 2 O-rings. Detachment of the water pump from the water pump cover involves removing two bolts as well as the screw and water pump together with the gasket. To determine if the water pump is leaking coolant check the air hole because water pump replacement is needed if leakage occurs and timing belt replacement becomes necessary if coolant covers it. The pulley needs to be turned for a smooth operation of the water pump bearing then the water pump needs replacement if necessary. Attach the new gasket with the water pump onto the water pump cover through the 2 bolts before torquing them to 8.8 Nm (90 kgf-cm, 78 inch lbs.). Before fixing the water bypass pipe to its cover, apply soapy water to the O-ring and then proceed with installation while leaving the nuts off. Use a new O-ring and gasket on the water pump cover. Insert the water pump through its three bolts by employing the correct sequence for tightening them until they reach 8.8 Nm (90 kgf-cm, 78 inch lbs.) then fasten the water pump cover to the water bypass pipe with both nuts. The generator drive belt adjusting bar can be reinstalled with a bolt secured to 22 Nm (220 kgf-cm, 16 ft. lbs.). The crankshaft position sensor connector clamp needs to be reconnected followed by the installation of the No. 2 idler pulley and timing belt. The lower radiator hose installation will follow coolant addition before engine start-up to check for leakage until complete reinstallation of the RH engine under cover.
