2000 Toyota MR2 Spyder Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the thermostat on 2000 Toyota MR2 Spyder?
A: The service and repair of the thermostat begins with draining engine coolant followed by removing the drive belt and generator and then front engine under cover. Remove the water inlet from the cylinder block after taking away its 2 nuts and collect the thermostat with its gasket. The valve opening temperature of the thermostat can be tested by immersing it into water while heating it slowly at 80 - 84 degrees Celsius (176 - 183.2 degrees Fahrenheit) and thermostat replacement is needed if results fall below specification. Check that the valve lift measures 10 mm (0.39 inch) at 90 degrees Celsius(194 degrees Fahrenheit) and the valve remains completely closed under 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) conditions but if the specifications are not met the thermostat must be replaced. To install the thermostat position it inside the cylinder block using a new gasket and ensure that the jiggle valve points upward with a 10 degrees tolerance. Determinalize the water inlet by tightening its 2 nuts up to 9 Nm (92 kgf-cm, 80 inch lbs.). Next, reinstall the front engine under cover, the generator, and the drive belt. Add engine coolant to the system afterward start the engine engine and verify there are no leaks then verify the engine coolant level.
