2000 Toyota Land Cruiser Wheel Bearing Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the wheel bearing on 2000 Toyota Land Cruiser?
A: Begin repair and service of the wheel bearing by first removing the front wheel and then the brake caliper following these steps: disconnect the flexible hose from the steering knuckle and remove the two bolts and washers with the caliper secured while in place. To start proceed with flange removal through a combination of screwdriver and hammer for greese cap removal followed by snap ring expander tool operation then complete the process by unthreading six nuts and washers followed by installing the nuts on temporary basis to protect stud bolt threads. A brass bar combined with a hammer allows you to disconnect the nuts and cone washers so you can remove the flange and gasket. You will need Special Service Tool: 09607-60020 to uninstall the lock washer before you can remove the lock nut and adjusting nut as well as the axle hub with disc from the assembly while protecting the ABS speed sensor rotor and oil seal from damage. Next apply the steering knuckle's axle hub containing the disc into the correct position before adding the outer bearing and claw washer. Use Special Service Tool: 09607-60020 and torques to 59 Nm (600 kgf-cm, 43 ft. lbs.) while rotating the axle hub several times to allow bearing settling before adjusting the nut to 4.3 - 6.5 Nm (44 - 66 kgf-cm, 38 - 57 inch lbs.) to achieve a preload of 42 - 67 N (4.3 - 6.8 kgf, 9.5 - 15.0 lbs) at starting. The technician installs a new lock washer followed by a lock nut which must be tightened to 64 Nm (650 kgf-cm, 47 ft. lbs.). After torquing the components the technician verifies the axle hub rotates without looseness and conducts another preload check. After placement on the lock nut you should bend one lock washer tooth inward and another outward to make it secure. New gaskets need installation on the axle hub before inserting the flange which should be fastened with six cone washers and washers and new nuts torqued to 33 Nm (335 kgf-cm, 24 ft. lbs.). To install the new snap ring and replace the grease cap on the flange require the removal of the drive shaft followed by snap ring selection for a 0.2 mm (0.008 inch) space between the flange tip and snap ring. Then use a snap ring expander to complete the installation. The procedure ends with installation of the brake caliper using washers and two bolts which require torquing to 123 Nm (1,250 kgf-cm, 91 ft. lbs.). The flexible hose along with its bolt joins the steering knuckle with a torque of 28 Nm (290 kgf-cm, 21 ft. lbs.). Finally, reinstallation of the front wheel requires 131 Nm (1,340 kgf-cm, 97 ft. lbs.) torque and ABS speed sensor signal verification.
