    Q:
How to overhaul the front shock absorber with coil spring on Scion xA? Posted by Customer
    A:
The overhaul process for the front shock absorber with coil spring starts by removing various components such as the front wiper arm head cap, front wiper arms and the hood to cowl top seal, the cowl top ventilator louvers from both sides. You need to remove the windshield wiper link assembly and cowl top panel outer by disconnecting hoses and wire harnesses before you take out 8 bolts. The front wheel removal process starts with freeing the shock absorber bracket by removing its bolt together with the ABS speed sensor wire harness clamp. To detach the front shock absorber with coil spring start by removing 2 nuts and bolts which disconnect it from the steering knuckle before removing the shock absorber using 3 nuts and suspension support No.2. Position the front shock absorber with coil spring inside a vise to prepare for installing its 2 nuts and bolt on the bracket while using Special Service Tool 09727-30021 (09727-00010, 09727-00021, 09727-00031) to compress the coil spring properly but avoid using an impact wrench to prevent tool damage. The procedure begins by using a screwdriver to remove the front support to front shock absorber left-hand nut equipped with 2 nuts followed by disassembly of the front suspension support sub-assembly left-hand and dust seal. After taking off the front coil spring seat upper left-hand together with the front coil spring insulator upper left-hand followed by removing the front coil spring left-hand and front spring bumper left-hand you need to examine the shock absorber assembly front left-hand for any unusual operating sounds or abnormal resistance. Replace the shock absorber if necessary. The shock absorber assembly front left-hand with the front spring bumper left-hand and the front coil spring left-hand must be installed while using the compressing service tool to place the lower end into the spring lower seat opening. The installation process begins by placing the front coil spring insulator upper left-hand with its "a" mark facing external and then adding the front coil spring seat upper left-hand showing the "OUT" mark outside. Finish the series with the front suspension support left-hand dust seal and sub-assembly. Install the suspension support front-hand side using a new center nut torqued to 33 Nm (340 kgf-cm, 25 ft. lbs.) while taking care to avoid damaging suspension support stud bolts before completing the process by removing the special service tool and applying MP grease to the suspension support. After installing the front suspension support dust cover left-hand the technician must proceed with installing the front shock absorber with coil spring while installing suspension support No.2 and connecting the shock absorber to the steering knuckle followed by torquing the nut to 132 Nm (1,350 kgf-cm, 97 ft. lbs.). After hose installation the mechanic applies 29 Nm (300 kgf-cm, 22 ft. lbs.) torque until reattaching the front wheel with 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.) torque followed by installing the cowl top panel outer with 8 bolts torqued to 5.0 Nm (51 kgf-cm, 44 inch lbs.). Hose and wire harness reconnection completes the process. Reinstallation of the windshield wiper link assembly and both cowl top ventilator louvers must be accompanied by the hood to cowl top seal and both front wiper arms before final inspection and front wheel alignment adjustment. When disposing of the shock absorber assembly front-left-hand extend the shock absorber rod before drilling a hole between points A and B on the cylinder to release the gas contained inside. Perform this operation with proper safety gear because it can produce metal fragments while recognizing that the gas has neither odor nor poisoning effects.
