    Q:
How to service the exhaust pipe assembly on Toyota Avalon? Posted by Customer
    A:
Service of the exhaust pipe assembly (2GR-FE) starts with removing old gaskets from the pipe and also removing rusted bolts and nuts. The first step requires removal of the 2 heated oxygen sensor (bank 1, 2 sensor 2) connectors followed by taking out both sensors. Start by taking out the 2 support brackets with their attached nuts from the front side of the exhaust. Then remove the two bolts from the rear support bracket. First service the exhaust pipe front by removing 2 nuts on the left bank exhaust manifold side followed by 2 bolts from the right bank side and finally disassembling the 2 nuts and 2 bolts from the center to extract the exhaust pipe front together with its 3 gaskets. You must remove 4 exhaust pipe tail nuts and disconnect 2 support systems while taking out the exhaust pipe center together with its 2 gaskets and 2 damper mounting bolts in the center assembly. The 2 exhaust pipe tails can be removed after disconnecting their respective 5 supports. A plastic hammer should be used to gently tap out the baffles from the exhaust tail pipe baffle sub-assembly for removal. To install the baffle correctly position its groove toward the projection found on the tail pipe. The 2 exhaust pipe tails need to be installed using the 5 supports while the installation of 2 tail assembly completes the procedure. The center assembly requires attaching the exhaust pipe damper using 2 bolts at 19 Nm torque and applying 2 new gaskets between tailpipes before connecting the supports to join the center position with 4 nuts tightened to 43 Nm torque. You must install 3 new gaskets for the front assembly and use 2 bolts with 2 nuts to attach it to the manifolds with a torque setting of 62 Nm. At the same time, link the front to the center with additional 2 nuts and 2 bolts that require a torque setting of 56 Nm. The installation process involves setting the rear support bracket with 2 bolts at 33 Nm torque and the front support brackets with 2 nuts also tightened to 33 Nm torque while verifying the correct orientation of both brackets. End the process by installing the two heated oxygen sensors while tightening them to 44 Nm and restoring their connector connections. The system requires checks for exhaust gas leaks followed by a tightening process or replacement of damaged components whenever needed.
