The process of registering the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) into a new Engine Control Module (ECM) requires using a hand-held tester to enter the VIN alphanumeric code with its 17 digits. VIN registration demands adhering to input instructions followed by VIN reading then final step is VIN writing. The testing device requires the arrow buttons UP, DOWN, RIGHT, LEFT and numerical buttons 0 to 9 for entering information. The RIGHT and LEFT buttons control cursor movement while UP and DOWN buttons select letters but to enter numbers users need to select corresponding numerical buttons. Positions your cursor on the incorrect character by selecting RIGHT or LEFT buttons and pick the right letter by selecting UP/DOWN or entering numbers through buttons. Verify that the entered VIN matches the vehicle VIN then use the ENTER key to complete the input. When reading the VIN operators should use the hand-held tester but they should also follow the same procedure to input the VIN using the tester.
