The A/C Compressor Clutch provides the engine power to the air-conditioning compressor when cooling is selected. When the system is activated, a drum inside the pulley is charged such that the pulley and A/C Compressor Clutch face are drawn together, allowing the belt to rotate the compressor. When the signal ceases, the drum is demagnetized and can rotate freely without creating unnecessary loads. In a standard Sienna application, the pulley rotates freely. An A/C Compressor Clutch that is functioning appropriately allows your Toyota's cabin to get the cold air it needs. When a compressor clutch fails, the cabin won't get cold and fuel usage may actually increase. If the A/C Compressor Clutch is worn or warped, it can slip, stick or break apart due to centrifugal force, which will chew up the drive belt and lower cooling performance. Low refrigerant oil, a restricted refrigerant flow, low voltage at the coil, or excessively high-pressure at the high side may cause overheating bearings or melting of the lubricant. Intense heat and distortion can negatively affect the compressor nose and seal. As a result, the A/C Compressor Clutch failure on a Toyota Sienna may necessitate the entire compressor assembly. This will provide a more reliable solution to maintaining Toyota Sienna climate control.

Toyota Sienna A/C Compressor Clutch Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the A/C Compressor Clutch on Toyota Sienna?
    A:
You should start the compressor clutch service or repair process by removing its components. Special Service Tools 07112-76060 work concurrently with a socket wrench to separate the shaft bolt from its location with a recommended torque value of 13.2 Nm (135 kg.cm, 9 ft.lb). The pressure plate removal process can begin by attaching Special Service Tool: 07112-66040 and continuing with the use of Special Service Tool: 07112-76060, 07112-6040 along with a socket wrench to complete the pressure plate removal and finally taking out the shims. The snap ring removal requires Special Service Tool: 07114-84020 to use which needs placement of the beveled side facing upward during reinstallation. A plastic hammer should be used to gently tap the rotor off its shaft while taking care to protect the pulley from damage. The procedure for stator removal begins with disconnecting the wire lead then using Special Service Tool: 07114-84020 to remove the snap ring. Place the beveled side toward the top for proper reinstallation before extracting the stator. Reassembly occurs according to the reverse procedures of disassembly. Check the magnetic clutch clearance through dial indicator transfer to the pressure plate and positive (+) battery terminal connection and negative (-) terminal application to monitor pressure plate and rotor gap alignment. The standard clearance range should be 0.5 plus or minus 0.15 mm (0.020 plus or minus 0.0059 in.). Measurement of the clearance should reach 0.5 plus or minus 0.15 mm (0.020 plus or minus 0.0059 in.) which can be corrected by adding shims of thickness 0.1 mm (0.004 in.), 0.3 mm (0.012 in.), or 0.5 mm (0.020 in.).
  • Q: How to remove and install the A/C Compressor Clutch in a refrigeration system on Toyota Sienna?
    A:
First step to remove the compressor and magnetic clutch entails recovering refrigerant from the refrigeration system before removing the front wheel RH and the front fender apron seal RH. The maintenance sequence begins with V-ribbed belt removal followed by separation of the Radiator along with the fan assembly. You should disconnect the discharge hose sub-assembly by removing both the bolt with its O-ring through the opening and then seal it with vinyl tape to protect against moisture and foreign material entry. The same procedure should be performed on the sub-assembly of the suction hose. Start by disconnecting the connector before loosening both clamps and releasing the wire harness. The compressor and magnetic clutch will come off when you remove their 2 bolts and 2 nuts. The compressor and magnetic clutch removal requires using a "TORX" socket wrench (E8) to remove the 2 stud bolts while extracting these components. You can install the compressor and magnetic clutch together by using a "TORX" socket wrench (E8) to tighten the 2 stud bolts to 10 N.m (102 kgf.cm, 7.4 ft.lbf) then add the 2 bolts and 2 nuts and torquing them to 25 N.m (255 kgf.cm, 18 ft.lbf). Reattach the connector after linking the wire harness and clamps through each other. Install the suction hose sub-assembly by detaching the vinyl tape followed by application of compressor oil (ND-OIL 8 or equivalent) on the new O-ring and fitting surface before installing the O-ring and securing the hose with the bolt at 5.4 N.m (55 kgf.cm, 48 in.lbf). Follow the same procedure for the installation of the discharge hose sub-assembly. Radiator and fan components as well as V-ribbed belt and front fender apron seal right side then front wheel right side must be reinstalled. Conclude repairs by charging the system with refrigerator while warming the engine before examining for refrigerant leaks.
