The PCV Valve used in Toyota Prius cars is an essential device that contributes in regulation of emissions and improvement of the engine power. This common engine component that is known as the PCV Valve keeps the gases produced through combustion in the crankcase recirculated back into the combustion chambers of the engine, thus burning the gases without polluting the environment with dangerous gases. Located inside the intake manifold, the PCV Valve works under the intake manifold vacuum conditions: it restricts the gas intake at idle conditions and in turn opens at higher RPMs to provide adequate crankcase ventilation without affecting the running of the engine. Also, a PCV Valve is actually a flame arrester and it also helps to maintain the vehicle's proper ventilation as it prevents the positive pressure from moving to the crankcase. Later, when the PCV valve wore out, engine oil leaks and other complications arose, and it became apparent that proper maintenance of the PCV Valve should be done from time to time to avoid the mentioned problems.

Toyota Prius PCV Valve Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the PCV Valve on Toyota Prius?
    A:
The service and repair of the Positive Crankcase Ventilation Valve requires workers to start by taking out the rear No. 2 floor board then continuing with the rear floor deck box removal followed by the rear No. 3 floor board extraction. Break the negative battery cable connection followed by a 90-second timeframe to allow the forgetting of Air Bag and seat belt pretensioner activation. Start by removing engine room No. 2 relay block through the process of unbolting two structures and removing both the relay block and then disconnecting four wire harness clamps. You should start by unfastening the clamp before separating the No. 1 air cleaner inlet from the air cleaner case while also disconnecting the mass air flow meter connector and taking off the wire harness clamp. Start by easing the clamps then unfasten the two bolts leading to air cleaner assembly removal. To start the procedure disconnect the fuel injector connector along with the ignition coil connector then take off both the 3 nuts and the wire harness clamp before removing the wire harness. Conclude by removing the brake master cylinder reservoir cover along with disconnecting the ventilation hose that leads to the removal of the ventilation valve.
  • Q: How to install the PCV Valve on Toyota Prius?
    A:
First install the ventilation valve onto the cylinder head cover at a torque level of 27 Nm (275 kgf-cm, 20 ft-lbf). The installation of these components requires securement of the brake master cylinder reservoir cover onto the cylinder head cover with 9.0 Nm (92 kgf-cm, 80 in-lbf) using three attached bolts. Then the fuel injector connector and ignition coil connector need to be connected. The installation procedure includes attaching 2 bolts to the air cleaner assembly while tightening the clamp to 7.0 Nm (71 kgf-cm, 62 in-lbf) and another clamp to 3.0 Nm (31 kgf-cm, 27 in-lbf). Next, connect the No. 1 air cleaner inlet to the air cleaner case with a torque of 3.0 Nm (31 kgf-cm, 27 in-lbf). The engine room No. 2 relay block must be installed with two bolts tightened to 8.4 Nm (86 kgf-cm, 74 in-lbf). Follow this step by installing the rear No. 3 floor board, rear deck floor box and rear No. 2 floor board. After cable attachment to the negative terminal, reconnect the cable to the negative terminal of the battery. Before completing the procedure it is necessary to execute initialization since reconnecting cables to the negative (-) battery terminal affects specific systems.
