The Toyota Highlander A/C Compressor Clutch engages engine rotation to the air-conditioning compressor when cooling is activated, playing a role in load and fuel management. The A/C Compressor Clutch works by magnetizing an electric coil on the inside of the pulley when the A/C switch is in the on position to attract the clutch plate to the rotating pulley and release it when the switch is switched off. A slipping or sticking A/C Compressor Clutch may cut cabin cooling, and also damage belts, or overheat bearings, and excessive heat may distort the compressor nose. This may be caused by low refrigerant oil, high system pressure or low coil voltage hence complete system tests are recommended prior to installing a replacement. The A/C Compressor Clutch is available to Toyota drivers as new or remanufactured components, available in some cases in a package with compressor and mounting hardware. Early repair of a failing A/C Compressor Clutch will ensure efficient functionality of the Toyota Highlander climate control system, and the interior of the Highlander will be comfortable on hot days.

Toyota Highlander A/C Compressor Clutch Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and replace the A/C Compressor Clutch on Toyota Highlander?
    A:
The first task to remove and replace 2AZ-FE's compressor and magnetic clutch includes discharging refrigerant from the refrigeration system. First loosen bolt A then bolt B and bolt C that secure the V (cooler compressor to crankshaft pulley) belt No.1 before moving on to remove the belt. Evacuate refrigerant from the cooler system and remove generator parts before taking off discharge hose No.1 by its nut and O-ring and covering exposed ends with vinyl tape for protection. Perform this procedure on cooler refrigerant suction hose No.1 also. The process of removing the compressor and magnetic clutch requires disconnecting the connector then removing the nut followed by the use of an E8 torque socket wrench on the stud bolt before proceeding to uninstall the three bolts which secure the compressor and magnetic clutch. Secure the compressor and magnetic clutch using the stud bolt and three bolts along with the nut by initial tightening but do not exceed proper torque until complete installation. Tighten bolts B, C, A one by one before the nut while pressing the compressor's rear side until secure and reattach the connector. The installation process of cooler refrigerant suction hose No.1 begins with tape removal followed by oil application on the O-ring and fit surface and new O-ring installation using a nut torque of 9.8 N.m (100 kgf.cm, 87 in.lbf). Repetition of this procedure must be performed on cooler refrigerant discharge hose No.1. First put on the V belt before reinstalling the generator assembly. The technician should finish by charging the system before warming up the engine while thoroughly checking for any refrigerant leaks.
  • Q: How to service and repair the A/C Compressor Clutch on Toyota Highlander?
    A:
Begin clutch compressor repair work by detaching the magnet clutch assembly by unfastening its bolt and bracket before mounting the compressor and magnetic clutch in a vise while avoiding the bracket and harness. Special Service Tool: 09930-00010 enables you to handle the magnet clutch hub while you remove the bolt, magnet clutch hub, and magnet clutch washer keeping track of the adjustable number of magnet clutch washers. Fire up a snap ring expander to pull out the snap ring along with magnet clutch rotor before you handle the seal cover of the bearing. After unscrewing the component the connector must be disconnected. Then repeat using the snap ring expander to remove the snap ring followed by the magnet clutch stator. According to the alignment picture fit all components in place then install the magnet clutch stator followed by a new snap ring positioned with the chamfered side facing upwards to protect the bearing's seal cover. Attain a new snap ring to insert onto the magnet clutch rotor while keeping the chamfered side oriented upwards and avoid snap ring expansion beyond 30.5 mm (1.2 in). After installing the magnet clutch washer you must put in the magnet clutch hub while keeping the identical combination of clutch washers as before. Use Special Service Tool: 09930-00010 to grip the magnet clutch hub while installing the bolt with a torque of 18 N.m (183 kgf.cm, 13 ft.lbf), performing this under the condition that no foreign objects or oil resides on the compressor shaft or bolt or clutch hub.
