Q: How to address a steering wheel that is off center on Toyota Celica?
A:
The first step to correct steering wheel misalignment involves putting masking tape at the top center points of both steering wheel and steering column upper cover. The driver should travel 100-meters forward in a straight path at 35 mph (56 km/h) before steering using the wheel. Place masking tape and draw a line after positioning the steering wheel straight ahead by using the upper surfaces of the wheel and spoke together with the SRS Air Bag reference. Use the masking tape to draw a new line then measure the screen distance that equals to 1 degrees by converting each 1 mm (0.04 inch) measurement to this angle. To perform adjustments first place identification marks on visible points of the RH and LH tie rod ends and rack ends. Then measure screw-to-end distances while recording these measurements. A technician should remove both rack boots' RH and LH clips before loosening their lock nuts and moving the rack ends 12 degrees through the same number of turns in opposite directions. Each 360 degrees rotation of the rack end produces 1.5 mm (0.059 in.) horizontal translation which results in a 12 degrees steering angle. Complete the procedure by retightening both lock nuts to 55 Nm (560 kgf-cm, 41 ft. lbs.) while maintaining the 1.5 mm (0.059 inch) distance tolerance between tie rod ends and rack end screws. Place boot clips back onto their respective locations.
