Scion xD Starter is an electric motor assembly that transforms the power of the battery into the mechanical rotation required to crank the engine. The Starter solenoid in the Scion xD design is an external one attached to the outside of the motor case to connect directly to the battery. High current is applied to the Starter by heavy gauge wire, and this solenoid not only drives the motor but also forces the drive gear into the flywheel or flexplate ring gear. Within the housing, a rotating armature rotates in field coils or permanent magnets. With current flowing, the armature is caused to rotate by the action of the electromagnetic force and, via the Starter drive, causes the crankshaft to rotate. When the engine is fired, an overrunning clutch will disengage the drive to avoid damage. In other units, there is a gear reduction system where the armature is connected to the drive by a reduction gear to enhance torque. The control circuit begins at the ignition switch, passes through a relay, and includes neutral or clutch safety switches. This Starter system is essential to the operation of the Scion xD, and therefore it is important to every Scion xD ignition event.
