The Scion xA Starter converts battery power into the mechanical movement that cranks the engine and begins combustion. This electric Starter consists of an externally mounted solenoid connected to the battery by heavy gauge wire. The ignition switch is set to START, which causes the solenoid to complete a circuit with a relay and a safety switch so that the vehicle is not in gear prior to the Starter turning. A rotating armature has current flowing through field coils or permanent magnets around it, and the armature and the Starter drive on the shaft are run by electromagnetic force. The drive gear interlocks with the flywheel or flexplate ring gear, rotating the crankshaft of the Scion xA until the engine fires. Then an overrunning clutch releases the drive to save the system. Other designs use an arrangement of reduction gears between the armature and drive that provides additional torque, as is applied in the single Starter style outlined in the Scion xA. All in all, this small unit incorporates electrical, mechanical and protective components to ensure that every Scion xA starts the engine under normal circumstances.

Scion xA Starter Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to remove and install the Starter on Scion xA?
    A:
The first step for Starter removal is disconnecting the negative battery cable and waiting at least 90 seconds before activation of Air Bags and seat belt pretensioners occurs. Start by removing the engine under cover LH and its 4 bolts and nut as well as the cover. Then proceed to the engine under cover RH by extracting its 4 bolts before taking off the cover. You must begin by extracting the flywheel housing side cover through a pulling motion. The starter assembly requires removal of the nut and starter wire followed by disconnecting the connector before removing the two bolts which detach the starter from its position. When installing the starter assembly start by placing the two bolts and reach a torque target of 37 N.m (377 kgf.cm, 27 ft.lbf). The starter wire needs to attach to terminal 30 using a nut, and users must tighten it to 9.8 N.m (100 kgf.cm, 7 ft.lbf) before plugging in the starter connector. Follow this step when you install the flywheel housing side cover by inserting the claw until it clicks into place; replace the cover if the claw becomes deformed. Attach the engine under cover RH with its 4 bolts to a torque of 5.0 N.m (51 kgf.cm, 44 in.lbf) before securing the engine under cover LH with the nut and 4 bolts to the same 5.0 N.m (51 kgf.cm, 44 in.lbf). The cable should go back to the negative battery terminal after which initialization processes are needed because some systems need it when cable connections occur.
