Scion tC Parking Brake Shoes generate the force to hold the vehicle stationary when the handbrake is activated. Each Parking Brake Shoes unit works within a brake drum and has a friction lining that protrudes outward against the wall of the drum when the parking lever is switched on and creates a resistance that holds the wheels in place. The purpose of these Parking Brake Shoes is to connect the final mechanical motion between the applied parking brake cable and the wheel, transforming this mechanical motion into the friction needed to prevent rotation during parking. In the Scion tC, Parking Brake Shoes are sold individually, in matched sets, or as a complete assembly, so one shoe can be replaced or a set of shoes can be replaced at the same time. Measuring the inside diameter of the brake disc requires a brake drum gauge which should be within 173 mm (6.81 inch) of the standard and not exceeding 174 mm (6.85 inch). The process of parking brake shoe strut LH removal starts by undoing the two return tension springs with needle-nose pliers followed by unfastening the parking brake shoe adjusting screw set. Special Service Tool 09718-00010 should be used for removing the holddown compression spring and spring pin which connects to the parking brake shoe lever LH. Use a ruler to check the shoe lining thickness until it reaches 3.2 mm (0.126 inch) without dropping below the minimum requirement of 1.0 mm (0.039 inch). Apply chalk to the brake disc to verify contact with the shoes while grinding the lining according to necessity.
