2009 Toyota Prius Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to Properly Replace the Oil Filter on 2009 Toyota Prius?
A: The process of replacing an oil filter for a 1NZ-FXE engine begins with protective measures against skin exposure to engine oil since the substance leads to dryness and irritation and poses risks from harmful compound presence. Protect your skin by wearing gloves together with protective clothing before you begin work and complete your washing procedure afterward. The disposal of used oil along with filters should happen in specific designated sites. The oil draining process starts with removing the oil filler cap followed by the oil drain plug to collect oil in a container and afterward cleaning and reinstalling the drain plug with a new gasket and torquing it to 38 Nm (387 kgf-cm, 28 ft-lbf). To proceed with the filter change use Special Service Tool 09228-06501 to uninstall the oil filter sub-assembly. To install the oil filter you should wash the installation area then put clean engine oil on the new filter gasket before slowly screwing it onto the seat until the gasket touches before tightening it with Special Service Tool: 09228-06501. The oil filter should be torqued to 17.5 Nm (178 kgf-cm, 13 ft-lbf) when there is enough space available but you can tighten it by hand a 3/4 turn if spacing is limited. Add a new oil filter before placing it in position and tightening it to spec while ensuring the engine oil cap is secure against the proper oil amount.
