2009 Toyota Prius Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to install the axle shaft assembly and related components on the LH side on 2009 Toyota Prius?
A: For the LH side front drive shaft assembly installation workers must first apply ATF to the inboard joint spline then align the front drive shaft spline with the joint and insert it using a brass bar hit by a hammer but ensure the snap ring cut area points downward and keep away from damaging the oil seal and front drive shaft boot; check for secure insertion through the brass bar reaction force or acoustic change. The front fender apron seal should be installed next before you duplicate the front drive shaft dust cover installation process for the RH side. To install the front axle assembly LH push the axle outwards while aligning the spline with the front drive shaft and insert it without excessive pressure which will prevent damage to the oil seal and front drive shaft boot or speed sensor rotor and ensure to check and remove any foreign matter on the speed sensor rotor. To connect the No. 1 front suspension arm sub-assembly lower LH properly, push it downward while installing the front lower ball joint and tightly fastening the bolt and 2 nuts to 89 Nm (908 kgf-cm, 66 ft-lbf). Installation of the tie rod end sub-assembly LH requires mounting to the steering knuckle under the condition that clip alignment should take place after torqueing the castle nut to 49 Nm (500 kgf-cm, 36 ft-lbf) and exchanging the clip. Complete assembly of the front speed sensor LH by fastening the bolt to 29 Nm (296 kgf-cm, 21 ft-lbf) for attaching the wire and flexible hose clamp to the shock absorber and setting the sensor to the steering knuckle at 8.0 Nm (82 kgf-cm, 71 in-lbf). Perform both steps while protecting the sensor tip from damage and preventing foreign objects from entering the area. Clean the threaded drive shaft parts and axle hub nut threads with non-residue solvent before installing a new hub nut that requires a torque of 216 Nm (2,200 kgf-cm, 159 ft-lbf) using a 30 mm socket wrench. Provide additional security to the hub nut by using a chisel with a hammer after installation. End the front wheel installation process by tightening it to 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft-lbf) and filling with transaxle oil before inspecting the oil and front wheel alignment and checking the speed sensor signal for the ABS.
