2008 Toyota RAV4 Shift Cable Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to replace the Shift Cable assembly for the U241E automatic transaxle on 2008 Toyota RAV4?
A: The process starts with rear console box sub-assembly removal in order to replace the U241E automatic transaxle transmission control cable assembly. The user should wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the negative battery terminal before proceeding because this prevents the Air Bag system from activating and the seat belt pretensioners from engaging. Start by unplugging the battery from the negative terminal followed by relaxing the nut and discarding the bolt and battery clamp then extracting both battery and battery tray along with the battery carrier using 4 bolts and 2 bolts from the battery bracket reinforcement. The air cleaner assembly removal process starts by disconnecting the mass air flow meter connector then removing the 2 clamps on the engine wire and the 4 bolts from the air cleaner case to finally disconnect the air cleaner case from its position on the No. 1 air cleaner inlet. Disassemble the transaxle control cable assembly by disconnecting it from the control shaft lever (remove the nut), the control cable bracket (remove the clip), the control cable support, and the shift lever as well as the bolt and clamp of the control cable. Secure the new transaxle control cable assembly using 2 bolts that should be tightened to 5.0 Nm while you turn the nut and engage the lock before orienting the cable extension upward. Follow these steps to install the control cable by fastening the first connection to the shift lever through the driver-side adjusting mechanism lock and then to the control cable bracket through the clip before finishing with a connection to the control shaft lever with the nut (Torque: 12 Nm). The clamp requires connection to the bolt using 12 Nm torque before attaching it to the cable support. Secure the air cleaner assembly to the No. 1 inlet point and use 4 bolts (applied with 5.0 Nm torque) before reconnecting the engine wire clamps along with the mass air flow meter connector. The installation process requires battery bracket reinforcement bolts at 20 Nm followed by battery carrier bolts at 20 Nm, a battery tray, and battery attachment with a battery clamp bolt at 8.5 Nm and a nut at 5.0 Nm. Recheck the shift lever movement from P to R while inspecting R to D transition then adjust the position if required. As the last step reinstall the rear console box sub-assembly.
