Q: How to service and repair the timing chain on 2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser?
A: Start maintenance on the timing chain by taking out the battery and performing basic engine service while detaching specific parts from the power steering link assembly. Untighten the 5 bolts that secure the fan, generator assembly, cooler compressor assembly, and V-ribbed belt tensioner assembly. Once you remove both components of the oil level gauge you can separate the steering vane pump assembly. Take off the power steering pressure switch connection and work out the connecting 2 bolts until you reach the pulley. Using 09213-54015 (91651-60855), 09330-00021, and Special Service Tool: 09950-50013, remove the crankshaft, No. 1, and No. 2 idler pulley units. Separate the No. 2 oil pan sub-assembly by removing its 10 bolts and 2 nuts and cutting through the sealing agent with Special Service Tool: 09032-00100. Take apart the oil strainer with its related components, oil pan, air filter, throttle body bracket, oil baffle plate, and other items including surge tank stays, intake air surge tank, ignition coil unit, camshaft timing oil control valve combination, VVT sensor, water inlet, and both cylinder head cover units. Separate the timing chain or belt cover by removing its 24 bolts and 2 nuts while protecting contact areas from damage. Bring No. 1 compression to TDC position and remove the 1-compressor tension assembly using proper safety steps. Next take off the chain tensioner slipper with idle sprocket and chain sub-assembly and vibration damper 2. Proceed with installation at the chain tensioner slipper and No. 1 chain tensioner assembly by aligning them correctly and tightening to specs. Connect the chain parts alongside No. 2 chain vibration damper and idle sprocket under engine oil application rules. After this install the timing gear case or timing chain case oil seal alongside the timing chain or belt cover sub-assembly fitted with new seal packing. The final step involves setting the cylinder head cover sub-assemblies. Place the water inlet first along with other components like the VVT sensor, camshaft oil valve assembly, ignition coil, intake surge tank, surge tank holders and oil baffle plate. Then install the throttle body mount and clean air filter assembly. Put back the oil pan sub-assembly by applying new seal packing correctly before adding the No. 2 oil pan sub-assembly and installing the crankshaft pulley tool: 09213-54015 (91651-60855), 09330-00021 to power the idler pulleys. Put back the vane pump parts in place with the oil level gauge guide and tensioner assembly. Also secure all fasteners to their correct tightness. Put everything back together and start with engine coolant before filling the engine oil, power steering fluid and 4WD differential oil. After bleeding the power steering fluid inspect for leaks on all 4 fluids while performing wheel alignment inspection.
