2006 Toyota Tundra Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service the thermostat on 2006 Toyota Tundra?
A: The service requires drain of engine coolant followed by V-bank cover removal. To continue the process separate the radiator outlet by taking off the No.2 hose clamp and clip before disconnecting the water inlet with the thermostat and gasket by removing 3 nuts. Inspect the thermostat through water heating steps while measuring its valve opening temperature level for proper function within 80 to 84 degrees Celsius (176 to 183 degrees Fahrenheit); if the valve does not meet this specification you need to replace the current thermostat. Thermostat replacement is necessary when the valve lift measurement falls below 8 mm (0.31 inch) at 95 degrees Celsius (203 degrees Fahrenheit). Replace the thermostat if you detect any valve leakage during low temperature conditions (below 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit)). Place the new gasket with the thermostat over the water inlet before installing it with 3 nuts that require torque setting to 9.0 Nm (92 kgf-cm, 80 inch lbs.). Attach the radiator outlet to the No.2 hose clamp or clip while adding engine coolant which requires leak inspection. Install the V-bank cover through its designated 2 nuts implemented at 9.8 Nm (100 kgf-cm, 87 inch lbs.).
