2006 Toyota RAV4 Starter Motor Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the starter motor on 2006 Toyota RAV4?
A: Service and repairs of the starter motor begin by disconnecting the lead wire from the magnetic switch assembly through nut removal then removing both screws securing the magnetic switch to the starter drive housing followed by pulling out the magnetic switch combined with its return spring and plunger from the housing. The starter yoke with its attached commutator end frame can be removed by removing two extended bolts and pulling the assembly out then separating the yoke from the frame. You need to remove the starter armature plate from the starter yoke followed by prying out the starter commutator end frame cover using a screwdriver. Workers should use snap ring pliers to uninstall the snap ring along with plate washer before extracting the armature from the commutator end frame. The 3 planetary gears need to be detached from inside the starter drive housing. High-temperature grease serves as the lubricant which needs to be applied for both bearings and gears and return spring and steel ball during the reassembly stage. Begin with installing credited planetary gears that receive high-temperature grease then install the planetary shaft pin parts. The plate washer and armature shaft need high-temperature grease prior to mounting the starter armature onto the starter commutator end frame and snap ring pliers will secure the plate washer using a new snap ring which must reduce less than 5.0 mm (0.197 in.) as obtained from the vernier caliper reading. The starter commutator end frame cover must be installed before placing the armature plate inside the starter yoke while matching the keyway on the starter plate with the key inside the starter yoke. The starter commutator end frame assembly must be installed through the starter yoke cutout by fitting end frame rubber to it and fastening the frame into the yoke. The starter yoke assembly should have the protrusion of the yoke aligned with the drive housing cutout before tightening the 2 through-bolts to 5.9 N.m (60 kgf.cm, 52 in.lbf). Completion of the magnetic switch assembly requires you to apply grease to the plunger and hook before hanging the plunger hook of the magnetic switch to the drive lever and installing the plunger with the return spring secured by 2 screws torqued to 7.5 N.m (76 kgf.cm, 66 in.lbf). The next step involves connecting the lead wire to the magnetic switch using the nut torqued to 10 N.m (102 kgf.cm, 7 ft.lbf).
