2006 Toyota Prius Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the front Sway Bar Kit on 2006 Toyota Prius?
A: The repair and servicing of the front sway bar kit must start with front wheels positioned straight ahead followed by removal of the column hole cover silencer sheet. First remove the front wheel after disconnecting the steering sliding yoke sub-assembly and the No. 1 steering column hole cover sub-assembly. Detach the 2 nuts to eliminate the front sway bar link assembly LH but stabilize the ball joint by gripping its stud with a 6 mm hexagon wrench when the nut turns with the joint. The floor panel brace front and the front exhaust pipe assembly must be removed after taking apart the No. 2 and No. 1 tie rod end sub-assemblies. The removal of 2 bolts from the front suspension crossmember allows for disconnecting the front No. 1 sway bar bracket LH followed by the same procedure for the RH side. The technician must remove the steering intermediate shaft together with the No. 1 steering column hole cover sub-assembly and the steering gear assembly. Begin by unfastening the two sway bar bushes followed by removing the front No. 1 sway bar kit from the vehicle right side. The ball joint stud should be flipped 5 times before installing the nut while a torque wrench applies continuous pressure at 2 to 4 seconds per turn to measure the fifth turn torque value at 0.05 to 1.96 Nm (0.5 to 20 kgf-cm or 0.4 to 17.4 inch lbs. A new front sway bar link needs replacement if the dust cover shows signs of damage or grease leakage or the value measurement exceeds the specified range. The front sway bar kit installation requires placement from the right side of the vehicle followed by front No. 1 sway bar bush mounting where the cutout should face the rear side with a maximum 5 mm (0.20 inch) left and right deviation of the sway bar kit. After installation of the steering gear assembly the vehicle needs the No. 1 steering column hole cover sub-assembly plus the steering intermediate shaft. You must install the front No. 1 sway bar bracket LH to the front suspension crossmember with 2 bolts and torque them to 19 Nm (194 kgf-cm, 14 ft. lbs.). Following the same procedure, attach the front No. 1 sway bar bracket RH. Fasten the front exhaust pipe assembly along with the floor panel brace front and the front sway bar link assembly LH using 2 nuts which must be torqued up to 74 Nm (755 kgf-cm, 55 ft. lbs.). Use a 6 mm hexagon wrench if required during this installation step. The last step involves installing the front wheel by torquing it to 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.). Afterwards the front wheel alignment needs evaluation and adjustment.
