2006 Toyota Avalon Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the timing chain on 2006 Toyota Avalon?
A: The procedure for 2GR-FE timing chain servicing begins with removing the engine assembly with transaxle before taking out engine wire, front frame assembly, starter assembly, automatic transaxle assembly and the oil level gauge guide sub-assembly that requires oil level gauge removal with its guides and O-rings. The installation of Special Service Tools 09213-7001 (09213-70020), 09330-00021 enables you to detach the drive plate & ring gear sub-assembly before fixing the engine assembly onto an engine stand. Proceed to remove the idler pulley sub-assembly No.2, engine mounting bracket RH, V-ribbed belt tensioner assembly, water pump pulley using Special Service Tool: 09960-10010 (09962-01000, 09963-00700), timing gear cover No.2, engine mounting stay No.2 RH, engine mounting bracket front No.1 LH, water inlet housing, and crankshaft pulley, utilizing Special Service Tool: 09213-70011 (09213-70020), 09330-00021 to hold the crankshaft pulley while loosening the pulley set bolt and then removing it with Special Service Tool: 09950-50013 (09951-05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05020, 09954-05021). To remove the oil pan sub-assembly No.2 you must detach 16 bolts and 2 nuts and cut through the applied sealer using Special Service Tool: 09032-00100 after which you should remove the oil strainer sub-assembly followed by the oil pan sub-assembly while cleaning the bolts and inspecting for damage. The technician must remove the intake air surge tank followed by the ignition coil assembly and the oil pipes No.1 and No.2 while detaching the cylinder head cover sub-assemblies RH and LH and the timing chain cover sub-assembly and its oil seal. Permanent radical oil strainer and pan sub-assemblies after setting the No.1 cylinder at compression TDC while tightening the pulley set bolt then aligning timing marks. Disassemble chain tensioner assembly No.1 and slipper before removing the chain sub-assembly by disconnecting it between the crankshaft timing gear and camshaft timing gear assembly. Seam the new chain sub-assembly into position by aligning the mark plate and timing marks yet avoid letting the chain cross the crankshaft and then place the chain tensioner slipper and assembly No.1 with timing mark alignment confirmed. Proceed with the installation sequence by starting with the timing chain cover oil seal through Special Service Tool: 09316-60011 (09316-00011), then move on to the timing chain cover sub-assembly, water inlet housing, engine mounting bracket front No.1 LH, cylinder head cover sub-assemblies LH and RH, oil pipes No.2 and No.1, ignition coil assembly, and intake air surge tank. The oil pan sub-assembly installation process starts with removing existing packing before installing fresh O-rings and applying seal packing (Part No.08826-00080) while torquing the oil pan to specified values. The oil strainer sub-assembly requires installation with fresh gasket and then comes installation of oil pan sub-assembly No.2 driven by correct seal packing methods. Torque the pulley set bolt after using Special Service Tool: 09213-70011 (09213-70020), 09330-00021 to install the crankshaft pulley. Complete assembly of the engine mounting stay No.2 RH and timing gear cover No.2 and water pump pulley sub-assembly using Special Service Tool 09960-10010 (09962-01000, 09963-00700), V-ribbed belt tensioner assembly and idler pulley sub-assembly No.2 followed by torquing each bolt to its specified values. The final step requires removal of the engine from the engine stand. Install the drive plate & ring gear sub-assembly with Special Service Tool: 09213-70011 (of type 09213-70020) and 09330-00021 while also installing the oil level gauge guide sub-assembly with new O-rings before adding the automatic transaxle assembly, starter assembly, front frame assembly, engine wire, and ultimately the engine assembly with transaxle.
