2004 Toyota Prius Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the exhaust pipe assembly on 2004 Toyota Prius?
A: Start exhaust pipe assembly (1NZ-FXE) servicing and repair work by removing rear floor board No.2, deck floor box rear, and rear floor board No.3. The technician should disconnect Engine Wire No.3 (battery negative terminal) then remove the instrument panel finish panel lower center. First use Special Service Tool: 09224-00010 to extract the heated oxygen sensor followed by the floor panel brace front through bolt removal of its 4 bolts. Start by taking off two bolts and two compression springs from the exhaust pipe assembly tail before detaching the exhaust pipe tail from the two exhaust pipe supports and removing the gasket on the exhaust nine front. The exhaust pipe assembly front requires removal of 2 bolts and 2 compression springs before detaching it from the 2 exhaust pipe supports and extracting the gasket from the exhaust manifold. The installation of the exhaust pipe assembly front requires caliper examination of compression spring free length to verify it measures at least 40.5 mm (1.594 inch); fail this check and replace the spring. To install the new gasket against the exhaust manifold, use a wooden block and plastic-faced hammer while positioning it correctly with a prohibition on gasket reuse. Fasten the exhaust pipe front to its 2 supports on the exhaust pipe supports with both springs and bolts tightened to 43 Nm (440 kgf-cm, 32 ft. lbs.). The exhaust pipe assembly tail's compression spring needs inspection for its free length which must exceed 38.5 mm (1.516 inch), otherwise replacing it. Insert an exhaust pipe front with new gasket in proper direction before attaching it to 2 supports and tightening bolts and compression springs until they reach 43 Nm torque (440 kgf-cm and 32 ft. lbs.). Start by tightening the floor panel brace front at 30 Nm (302 kgf-cm, 22 ft. lbs.) and then install the instrument panel finish panel lower center along with the heated oxygen sensor with Special Service Tool: 09224-00010. Follow this procedure to fix the exhaust gas leaks while reinstalling the rear floor board No.3 and deck floor box rear and rear floor board No.2. The procedure ends with an initialization of the power window control system.
