2004 Toyota Highlander Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to service and repair the exhaust pipe on 2004 Toyota Highlander?
A: The service and repair of the exhaust pipe should start by disassembling the front then the center then the tail sections in that sequence. Install the tail pipe assembly where you must check the compression spring free length with vernier calipers which requires 42 mm (1.6535 inch) measurement. Replace the compression spring if the measurement does not meet this requirement. Use a new gasket before connecting the center pipe to the tail pipe and tighten it to 48 Nm (490 kgf-cm, 36 ft. lbs.). Follow by installing the front pipe assembly and measure the compression spring free length for the second time as it should be 43 mm (1.6929 inch) before replacing the spring if needed. To connect the front pipe to the center pipe use a new gasket with a torque setting of 56 Nm (571 kgf-cm, 42 ft. lbs.), followed by installation of another new gasket for attaching the front pipe to the exhaust manifold converter that needs 48 Nm (490 kgf-cm, 36 ft. lbs.) torque. Perform exhaust gas leak inspection as the final step.
