2004 Toyota Avalon Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair a Neutral Safety Switch on 2004 Toyota Avalon?
A: Service and repair operations on the PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION (PNP) SWITCH start with eliminating the engine under cover. The first step for servicing the PNP switch involves disconnecting its connector followed by removing the switch through a procedure that starts with clip removal from the shift control cable and continues with control cable nut removal. The labor procedure requires the following steps: First remove the nut and washer along with the transaxle control shaft lever and then pry off the lock plate using a screwdriver before taking out the lock plate and nut. Remove the two bolts to extract the park/neutral position switch from its place. New park/neutral position switch installation requires proper torque value of 5.4 Nm (55 kgf-cm, 48 inch lbs.) for the two bolts followed by use of a new lock plate and nut with a torque of 6.9 Nm (70 kgf-cm, 61 inch lbs.). The installation concludes with bending the lock plate claws for staking the nut. Begin by attaching the transaxle control shaft lever alongside the washer before screwing the nut to 15 Nm (150 kgf-cm, 11 ft. lbs.). Then place the control cable along with its nut secured to 15 Nm (150 kgf-cm, 11 ft. lbs.) and finish by installing the clip to the shift control cable. Assess the correct functioning of engine start by checking for restricted operation between the N and P positions through the park/neutral position switch connector. The necessary adjustment procedure should follow any failings. The installation of the engine under cover begins only after completing the vehicle test.
