2004 Toyota Avalon Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to replace the front Brake Pad Set on 2004 Toyota Avalon?
A: One should inspect pad lining thickness through the caliper inspection hole after removing the front wheel before pad replacement because pad thicknesses under 1.0 mm (0.039 inch) require new installation. After removing the shock bracket bolt and flexible hose from the caliper you can raise it up and take out the lower installation bolt before securely disposing the caliper by keeping the flexible hose attached. Start by extracting the two brake pads together with their accompanying four anti-squeal shims then remove the pad wear indicator plate before taking out the two pad support plates. Reuse the support plates when they meet all criteria of being without deformation or cracks or wear or rust or dirt. You should inspect the disc surface along with the runout before attaching new pads together with support plates making sure to install the pads with their included anti-squeal shims and wear indicators. Place the inner pad wear indicator plate first before applying disc brake grease to both sides of two anti-squeal shims that will afterwards be installed on each pad. The wear indicator plate of the inner pad should be oriented face up while positioning the pads correctly with no oil or grease present on the friction surfaces. Use a brake fluid pair to draw out some liquid before using a hammer handle or similar tool to push the piston inward and optionally unscrew the bleeder plug to help with piston movement. Secure the caliper by applying 34 Nm (350 kgf-cm, 25 ft. lbs.) torque to the installation bolt while holding the sliding pin. Replace the flexible hose to the shock absorber bracket followed by bolt installation and torque to 29 Nm (300 kgf-cm, 21 ft. lbs.). To complete the procedure you must reinstall the front wheel and torque it to 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.) then push the brake pedal several times to check the fluid reaches the maximum line.
