2003 Toyota RAV4 Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to replace the Brake Pad Set on 2003 Toyota RAV4?
A: You should start pad replacement by detaching the front wheel then mounting the disc temporarily through hub nuts. Use the caliper inspection hole to measure the pad lining thickness; replace the pads when thickness falls below 1.0 mm (0.039 inch). Securely suspend the caliper after releasing the installation bolt while holding the bottom sliding pin then detach the bolt but do not disconnect the flexible hose. Disassemble the brake pads and their corresponding anti-squeal shims, pad support plates and pad wear indicator while keeping support plates reusable when they are free of deformities, cracks, wear and non-damaged with no rust and dirt accumulation. The first task includes inspecting disc thickness together with detecting runout before inserting all four pad support plates. For installing new pads and anti-squeal shims use disc brake grease on the inner shim sides before installing 2 shims onto each pad and adding the inner pad followed by its pad wear indicator. The pads' friction area together with the disc must be free from all traces of oil and grease. Pull out a minor amount of brake fluid from the reservoir before forcing the piston in with a hammer handle or equivalent tool yet soften the procedure by opening the bleeder plug. After caliper installation secure the sliding pin then tighten the bolt installation to 26 Nm (270 kgf-cm, 20 ft. lbs.). Inspect the front wheel after installation and verify that the fluid is present at the maximum marking.
