2003 Toyota Prius Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the Brake Master Cylinder on 2003 Toyota Prius?
A: Begin the Brake Master Cylinder repair by placing the master cylinder inside a vise that utilizes Special Service Tool: 09630-00014 (09631-00142), 09950-60010 (09951-00180, 09951-00190). First users must untighten the lock nut then remove the clevis along with the lock nut while maintaining a torque of 26 Nm (265 kgf-cm, 19 ft. lbs.). After removing the cylinder boot you should proceed to gently squeeze the piston inward with a screwdriver while using a pin or equivalent tool to push out the snap ring from the body hole. The snap ring will then easily detach with another screwdriver. Pull out the No. 1 and No. 2 pistons by aligning them with the cylinder bore and maintain their straight position to protect the bore from damage and remove the plug. Rust and scoring should be checked in the cylinder bore while you should examine it for wear or damage before deciding on cleaning or replacing the cylinder. The reassembly needs to start from the opposite direction of disassembly while applying lithium soap base glycol grease to rubber parts marked with arrows for optimal performance.
