2003 Toyota Matrix Exhaust Pipe Parts Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair an Exhaust Pipe on 2003 Toyota Matrix?
A: Start by uninstalling the console box assembly rear from the service and repair of an exhaust pipe along with a connector disconnection procedure followed by extracting the console box insert and console box damper RR with the four bolts that secure the assembly. After disconnecting the oxygen No. 2 sensor connector placed in the rear position you need to extract the sensor from the front part of the exhaust pipe assembly. At the front position start by erasing the floor mat and then detach the oxygen No. 2 sensor connector before extracting the sensor from the exhaust pipe assembly front. The tail pipe assembly removal requires two bolts and two springs removal before proceeding to take off the two nuts securing the front floor panel brace. To detach the exhaust pipe assembly front you need to remove two bolts as well as two springs before taking off the exhaust front pipe. The free length of the compression spring for the exhaust pipe assembly front installation requires vernier caliper measurement. A correct reading should be 43 mm (1.693 inch); replace the spring in case of discrepancy. Mount the exhaust manifold gasket before fixing the exhaust front pipe through two bolts and two springs and torques the assembly to 43 Nm (440 kgf-cm, 32 ft. lbs.). Secure the front floor panel brace with two nuts through proper torquing to 30 Nm (302 kgf-cm, 22 ft. lbs.). The installation of the exhaust tail pipe requires measuring the compression spring for 40 mm (1.575 inch) free length; if the measurement does not meet requirements get a new compression spring; now install a new gasket on the exhaust pipe front and attach the exhaust tail pipe using two bolts and two springs and torque them to 43 Nm (440 kgf-cm, 32ft lbs.). Top position the oxygen sensor No. 2 while torquing it to 44 Nm (450 kgf-cm, 33 ft. lbs.) before attaching its connector and inspecting wire positioning that must be free from twisting; handle any twisting by removing and reinstalling the sensor. Apply the same torque values and perform a wire check during the rear oxygen No. 2 sensor installation. The last step involves connecting the console box assembly rear with four bolts before you inspect for exhaust gas leaks.
