- Q: How to replace the shift cable on 2003 Toyota Highlander?A: The shift cable replacement procedure starts with removing the instrument cluster finish panel assembly center as well as the floor carpet cover center RH and the floor carpet cover center LH and the instrument panel finish panel lower center. The maintenance process starts with battery removal followed by elimination of the air cleaner assembly and air cleaner hose No.1. To proceed with the floor shift transmission control cable assembly replacement start by removing the control shaft lever's nut then disconnect the control cable from the lever followed by releasing the clip needed to separate the control cable from its bracket before you disconnect the control cable from its clamp and detach the cable end from the floor shift assembly's rod and end the process by removing the 2 nuts and 3 bolts which enable you to pull out the control cable from the body. To install the control cable start by pulling it toward the body before screwing three bolts at 4.9 Nm (50 kgf-cm, 43 inch lbs.) and placing the cable end with its uneven surface facing up. The technician needs to secure control cable nuts to a torque of 11.8 Nm (122 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.) before connecting the control cable to the control cable clamp. Following this the cable will be installed temporarily to the control shaft lever with screws for mounting the control cable and bracket attachment. Installation of the air cleaner assembly follows and the shift lever needs position adjustment before examining its current position.
