2003 Toyota Echo Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the radiator on 2003 Toyota Echo?
A: You must start radiator service and repair work by extracting the drain plug along with O-rings and disconnecting the No. 3 radiator hose before removing the water filter with its two bolts. The claw installation on the overhaul handle requires Special Service Tool: 09230-01010 which ensures dimension "B" falls between 0.2 - 0.3 mm (0.008 - 0.012 inch) for protection from damage. Use the tool to uncaulk the lock plates until stopper bolts lock the handle in place. Then tap the radiator bracket gently to extract tanks together with their O-rings. To remove the oil cooler from the lower tank of automatic transmission you must first detach the two nuts along with the two plate washers before extracting the oil cooler along with its two O-rings. The lock plate needs to be checked for damage because any deformation will affect reassembly while noting the radiator has a maximum two reapplication limit until it requires a full replacement. Secure the oil cooler to the lower tank by installing two new O-rings, then fasten it with two plate washers, two nuts and torque it to 8.34 Nm (85 kgf-cm, 74 inch lbs.). Tighten new O-rings in the lock plate groove only when no foreign matter exists while using a soft-faced hammer to eliminate spaces in the plate by tapping it. Complete assembly with Special Service Tool: 09230-01010 and 09231-14010 by adjusting the stopper bolt to establish a dimension of 8.4 mm (0.331 inch). The lock plate requires caulk application using the tool to maintain its height between 7.40 - 7.80 mm (0.2913 - 0.3071 inch) while performing the caulk outside the area around pipes and brackets. Install the water filter using two bolts that should reach 7.5 Nm (76 kgf-cm, 66 inch lbs.) torque. Reconnect the No. 3 radiator hose afterward while installing a new O-ring on the drain plug before secure its placement. The inspection for leaks requires the use of Special Service Tool: 09230-01010 with a test pressure of 177 kPa (1.8 kgf/cm2, 26 psi) using a radiator cap tester while submerging the radiator in water to check for leaks. It is important to note that radiators with resin tanks can contain a small amount of air that can be eliminated by swishing the radiator in water before testing.
