2003 Toyota Celica Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the starter motor on 2003 Toyota Celica?
A: Obtain access to service and fix a starter motor by starting with the following steps: first remove the field frame with armature from the magnetic switch assembly after disconnected lead wire from magnetic switch terminal followed by through bolt removal and screws unfastening the end cover of the field frame. The service procedure starts with field frame ring extraction followed by a screwdriver to disconnect the brush from the brush holder before separate removal of the 4 brushes and the brush holder. You should extract the field frame from the magnetic switch assembly before you eliminate the O-ring. To dismantle the starter housing and clutch assembly together with gears remove the two bolts with force of 5.9 N.m (60 kgf.cm, 52 in.lbf) before removing these hardware components from the magnetic switch assembly. A magnetic finger should be used to extract the steel ball found inside the clutch shaft hole. Before installation of the 1ZZ-FE armature remove it from the magnetic switch assembly while 2ZZ-GE users should use a press. High-temperature grease should be applied to bearings as well as gears during the reassembly process. Position correctly the ring projection of the front bearing on the magnetic switch assembly of the 2ZZ-GE before applying grease to the armature bearings. The steel ball should be placed into the clutch shaft hole after adding grease before inserting the return spring which received grease treatment into the magnetic switch hole. The starter housing requires installation of a new O-ring alongside the starter clutch assembly and idler gear and bearing before screwing it into the magnetic switch with 2 screws at 9.3 N.m torque (95 kgf.cm, 82 in.lbf). Place the O-ring inside the field frame groove then fit it properly with the magnetic switch before installation. Place the brush holder to the field frame while using a screwdriver to keep the brush spring back then connect the brushes making sure to maintain non-grounded positive lead wires. Use a new O-ring to guide the field frame groove before fastening the end cover with 2 screws which need a torque of 3.8 N.m (39 kgf.cm, 34 in.lbf). Secure the field frame and armature assembly with 2 through bolts at 9.3 N.m (95 kgf.cm, 82 in.lbf). Secure the lead wire to terminal C at 5.9 N.m (60 kgf.cm, 52 in.lbf) with the provided nut. Turn the bearing manually to check for resistance; if resistance occurs replace it with SST 09286-46011 for removal then use SST 09820-00031 for pressing a new front bearing. Use 3 bolts to remove the magnetic switch end cover, gasket, plunger, and inspect the contact plate using vernier calipers for its depth measurement. Replace the contact plate if it measures over 0.9 mm (0.035 in.). When tightening the new terminal 30 and C kit parts using SST 09810-38140, make sure to align the terminal insulators properly before installation. Secure the terminal nuts while putting a wooden block on the contact plate under known pressure of 981 N (100 kgf, 221 lbf) and check that torque falls below 17 N.m (173 kgf.cm, 12 ft.lbf) to prevent insulator cracking. The contact surfaces of the contact plate and plunger require cleaning before placing the magnetic switch end cover with plunger and new gasket and installing 3 bolts with torque at 2.5 N.m (26 kgf.cm, 23 in.lbf).
