2002 Toyota Prius Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How Should You Properly Deploy an Air Bag When Scrapping a Vehicle on 2002 Toyota Prius?
A: Always select the specified Special Service Tool: 09082-00700 (SRS Air Bag Deployment Tool) to deploy vehicle Air Bags outdoors before disposal procedures on vehicles with SRS systems and their side Air Bag assemblies. The operational battery needs to be prepared for deployment purposes. First inspect the Special Service Tool then disconnect the side Air Bag connector while safeguarding both the Air Bag wire harness from damage. Install both connectors of Special Service Tools: 09082-00700 and 09082-00750 to the Air Bag connector while leaving the secondary lock of the twin lock unlocked to avoid breaking the tool. Start by retrieving the Special Service Tool which must remain at least 10 m (33 ft) from the vehicle frontpoint. Then shut all doors followed by connecting the red clip to the battery positive (+) and black clip to the battery negative (-) terminals. Check all areas from inside the vehicle and 10 m (33 ft) outside to ensure no persons are present before pressing the activation switch to deploy the Air Bag. Time must pass before handling the hot side Air Bag assembly after deployment because safety protocols require 30 minutes of delay. Gloves and safety lenses need to be worn along with water-free contact rules and mandatory hand washing with water following maintenance work. A vehicle can undergo scrapping only after activating the Air Bags that must remain on the vehicle during the disposal process. The Air Bag activates together with the LED illumination on the Special Service Tool activation switch's button.
