2002 Toyota Highlander Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to Service and Repair an Exhaust Pipe on 2002 Toyota Highlander?
A: The exhaust pipe repair process starts with exhaust pipe assembly removal from the front section and then proceeds to the center assembly and concludes with removal of the tail pipe assembly. Measuring the compression spring's free length with vernier calipers is required before and during assembly to check if the length is 42 mm (1.6535 inch). Replace the compression spring if the measurement shows otherwise. The center pipe needs a new gasket before being fitted to the tail pipe with 48 Nm (490 kgf-cm, 36 ft. lbs.) torque. The next step is to install the exhaust pipe assembly at the front section while checking the compression spring free length again. If it measures 43 mm (1.6929 inch) replace the compression spring. The repair requires installation of new gaskets to secure the front pipe with center pipe using 56 Nm (571 kgf-cm, 42 ft. lbs.) torque and subsequently attaching the front pipe to the exhaust manifold converter using 48 Nm (490 kgf-cm, 36 ft. lbs.) torque. Exhaust gas leaks need to be checked during this procedure.
