2002 Toyota Corolla Thermostat Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the thermostat on 2002 Toyota Corolla?
A: Service and repair of the thermostat requires draining the engine coolant followed by removing both the drive belt and generator. First disconnect the ECT switch connector then remove the two nuts to take off the water inlet from the cylinder block before removing the thermostat and its gasket. You should check the thermostat for correct valve opening temperature while gradually heating it in water starting at 74.0 - 78.5 degrees Celsius (165 - 173 degrees Fahrenheit). Replace the thermostat if it fails this test. Examine both the valve lift function and its position at 90 degrees Celsius (194 degrees Fahrenheit) with minimum measurement of 10 mm (0.39 inch). The valve should remain fully closed at temperatures below 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit); if either test fails, change the thermostat. To perform the installation put the thermostat inside the cylinder block while using a new gasket and direct the jiggle valve to face upward resting at 10 degrees from its specified location. Connect the water inlet with 2 nuts before torquing them to 9 Nm (92 kgf-cm, 80 inch lbs.) and reinstall the generator and drive belt. To finish install the engine coolant until the reservoir is full then start the engine to verify there are no coolant drips.
