Before throwing out the high-pressure gas from a back door stay, drill a 2.0 - 3.0 mm (0.079 - 0.118 in.) hole at the bottom of the component to create an exit for the gas stream while taking precaution due to the possibility of projectile copper chips during this process because the gas itself is both colorless and odorless and non-toxic. When handling the back door stay maintain careful touch to protect the exposed portion of the piston rod and keep paint and oil away from contact with it. The piston rod and cylinder together with the fully extended back door stay must not rotate. The installation of the new back door stay requires first attaching it to the body with proper bolt spacing and 22 N.m (225 kgf.cm, 16 ft.lbf) torque before installing the bolt together with the back door stay to the back door applying 17 N.m (175 kgf.cm, 13 ft.lbf) torque.
