2001 Toyota RAV4 Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: How to service and repair the Neutral Safety Switch on 2001 Toyota RAV4?
A: Service and repair operations on the Transmission Position Switch/Sensor require starting by disconnecting the park/neutral position switch connector. Take off the park/neutral position switch by removing the nut before taking out the nut and washer and control shift lever. Start by using a screwdriver to release the lock plate then take out the nut and finally the lock plate to proceed with the removal of the two bolts which will enable pulling out the park/neutral position switch. Installation of the park/neutral position switch requires securing two bolts that should be torqued to 5.4 Nm (55 kgf-cm, 48 inch lbs.). Next, add new hardware by torquing a lock plate and nut to 6.9 Nm (70 kgf-cm, 61 inch lbs.), before bending the lock plate claws to secure the nut. After properly torquing the nut that attaches the control shift lever to 12.7 Nm (130 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.), attach the control cable to the control shaft using 15 Nm (150 kgf-cm, 11 ft. lbs.). Recheck the operation of the park/neutral position after connecting the switch and ensure starting the engine requires the shift lever on N or P positions. Move to the adjustment process if starting fails. Perform a test drive of the vehicle as the last step.
