2001 Toyota RAV4 Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the vacuum brake booster on 2001 Toyota RAV4?
A: The vacuum brake booster service and repair process starts by extracting the master cylinder followed by vacuum hose detachment from the brake booster then removal of the pedal return spring but before taking out the brake booster a technician must remove 4 nuts and clevis along with the clip and clevis pin. The installation process starts by adding a new gasket and booster before attaching the clevis to the operating rod and torquing booster installation nuts to 13 Nm (130 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.). Attach the clevis pin first to the clevis and brake pedal structure then install the clip to the clevis pin followed by the pedal return spring. The process for boosting rod length adjustment involves placing two new gaskets on top of the master cylinder master cylinder followed by using Special Service Tool: 09737-00011 to set the tool in position while moving the pin down until the tip makes slight contact with the piston. Set the upside-down Special Service Tool: 09737-00011 on top of the brake booster to measure the push rod clearance until it reaches 0 mm (0 inch) from the moving pin head. Use Special Service Tool: 09737-00020 to adjust the booster push rod so it barely graze the pin head when pressing the brake pedal sufficient enough to expose the rod during adjustment. You should bring together the vacuum hose with the brake booster and position the master cylinder before you fill the brake reservoir with brake fluid and perform a brake system bleed. An operational check must follow adjustment of the brake pedal together with clevis lock nut tightening to 26 Nm (260 kgf-cm, 20 ft. lbs.). Check for leaks before conducting this procedure.
