2001 Toyota RAV4 Parts Questions & Experts Answers
Q: What precautions should be taken when deploying an Air Bag before scrapping a vehicle equipped with an SRS on 2001 Toyota RAV4?
A: The proper process for vehicle scrapping or disposal of steering wheel pads containing Air Bags starts with Air Bag deployment which requires the use of Special Service Tool 09082-00700 (SRS Air Bag Deployment Tool). Perform this operation outside the vehicle space while keeping at least 10 m (33 ft) distance from the steering wheel pad when deploying the Air Bag device. Check the Special Service Tool functionality by connecting the red clip to the battery positive (+) terminal and the black clip to the battery negative (-) terminal but keep the yellow supplement restraint system connector disconnected. Check the Special Service Tool activation with the button then confirm LED illumination before use but skip the tool usage if the LED lights up by itself. To install the tool after separating it from the battery start by removing the column lower cover while disconnecting the Air Bag connector from the spiral cable. Connect the two Special Service Tool connectors: 09082-00700, 09082-00760 to the Air Bag connector. After moving the tool beyond 10 m (33 ft) from the vehicle open windows and doors before reconnecting it to the battery. Make sure no one is inside the automobile or positioned within the 10 m (33 ft) zone after checking that no one remains in or near the area. Activate the Air Bag by pushing the button next to it while the LED indicator eventuates at the same time. Steer clear of the heated steering wheel pad for at least 30 minutes after deployment and handle it with gloves and safety glasses before later washing your hands with water and avoiding water contact with the deployed Air Bag. Gloved personnel must follow safety procedures including deploying the Air Bag before they scrap the vehicle while inspecting installation of the pad with their eyes protected by safety glasses.
