2001 Toyota 4Runner Air Bag Parts Q&A

  • Q: What precautions should be taken when deploying an Air Bag before scrapping a vehicle equipped with an SRS on 2001 Toyota 4Runner?
A: The specified Special Service Tool: 09082-00700 (SRS Air Bag Deployment Tool) needs to be used for deploying Air Bags before scraping SRS-equipped vehicles or discarding steering wheel pads. Steer away from residential areas when conducting the operation by performing it outside the vehicle while keeping at least 10 m (33 ft) from the steering wheel pad. The Special Service Tool requires testing with an attached battery before deployment by placing the positive terminal red clip and negative terminal black clip with avoidance of connecting the yellow connector. Make sure the Special Service Tool shows a signal when you press its activation switch but do not utilize the tool when you notice it illuminates without your contact. The installer should first remove the lower steering column cover before disconnecting the spiral cable's Air Bag connector. Then the Special Service Tool must be connected to the Air Bag connector and taken at least 10 meters (33 feet) away from the vehicle. Before you activate the Air Bag deployment with the activation switch confirm that all doors are closed and no one remains inside or near the vehicle. Activation of the Air Bag occurs at the same time as the LED light illumination. The Air Bag deployment should wait 30 minutes for cooling before handling with protective gear and washing hands extensively while avoiding contact with deployed Air Bags with water at any time. During Air Bag deployment you need to keep the steering wheel pad in place while operating the Air Bag system followed by wearing protective gloves and safety glasses during the car movement for scrapping procedures.
