Q: How to replace the universal joint in a propeller shaft on 2000 Toyota Tundra?
A: Before installing a new universal joint researchers should use matchmarks for the yoke and shaft. The snap ring becomes removable after gently tapping on the bearing outer race with a brass bar under hammer action. 2 screwdrivers are needed for removing the 4 snap rings from the grooves of the 4WD rear propeller shaft and needle nose pliers will eliminate the 4 snap rings on the 2WD and 4WD front propeller shaft. Push out the spider bearing from the flange yoke using Special Service Tool: 09332-25010 but raise the indicated part in order to prevent bearing contact. Place the bearing outer race into the vise before striking the flange with a hammer until properly tapped. This process needs to be repeated for each side. Using Special Service Tool: 09332-25010 both bearing inner and outer races are pressed from the yoke to enable hammer tapping which is repeated on the opposing side. Choose the suitable spider bearing from the available options by checking if the yoke has a drill mark present. Install new spider and bearings by applying MP grease but avoid excessive amounts of grease during the process. Install the bearing on the spider by positioning it inside the yoke while using Special Service Tool: 09332-25010. Mark the snap ring grooves by maximizing their width when the dimensions are equal across both bearings. Use 2 new snap rings of equal thickness to create 0 - 0.05 mm (0 - 0.0020 inch) of trim axial movement without using previously installed snap rings. A hammer should be used to tap the yoke of the 4WD rear propeller shaft and 2WD and 4WD front propeller shaft until the bearing outer race touches the snap ring. The spider bearing must move with ease during the check while its axial play measurement should be set at 0 mm (0 inch) for 4WD rear propeller shafts and 0.05 mm (0.0020 inch) for 2WD and 4WD front propeller shafts. The 4WD vehicle requires the grease fitting assembly hole of the rear propeller shaft spider to face its proper direction for replacement.
