2000 Toyota Tacoma Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install the timing chain on 2000 Toyota Tacoma?
A: The first step for timing chain removal consists of removing engine under cover followed by engine oil drainage. The front differential drive shafts assembly must be removed before uninstalling the generator drive belt together with the fluid coupling fan and water pump pulley for 4WD vehicles. The next step is to remove the cylinder head assembly followed by disconnecting the A/C compressor and bracket through the removal of 4 bolts after which the compressor needs suspension. The generator procedure requires disconnection of the generator connector along with removal of the nut and wire clip before removing the lock bolt pivot bolt and generator. To remove the crankshaft position sensor you should first extract its 2 bolts and then extract the O-ring. The stiffener plates on 2WD vehicles need to be removed through the process of unbolting 8 fixtures. Start handling the flywheel housing under cover with dust seal until you access and extract the oil pan through removal of its 16 bolts and 2 nuts. Cut off the applied sealer with SST 09032-00100. Use plastic faced hammer to gradually loosen the timing chain cover and extract the crankshaft pulley (using SST 09213-54015, 09330-00021 and the oil strainer. After removing SST 09950-40011, disconnect the crankshaft timing sprocket and the camshaft timing sprocket followed by No.1 timing chain. The next step requires removal of the No.1 timing chain tensioner slipper together with the No.1 vibration damper. Crankshaft position sensor rotor and timing chain oil jet removal is necessary for 2RZ-FE vehicles. Before installing the balance shaft components, 3RZ-FE owners must remove the No.2 and No.3 vibration dampers together with the No.2 chain tensioner and then follow it up with the balance shaft drive gear, No.2 timing chain and No.2 crankshaft timing sprocket and finally the No.4 vibration damper. High-quality vernier calipers must be used to measure the sprocket diameters followed by chain and sprocket elongation assessments. Check if wear exists in the chain tensioner slipper and vibration dampers and examine the oil jet for damage and clogging. Start the installation process at TDC of No.1 cylinder by adding the No.4 vibration damper then continue using the order described until all timing marks line up correctly. The No.2 chain tensioner should be followed by the No.2 and No.3 vibration dampers and the oil jet and crankshaft position sensor rotor for 2RZ-FE installation. Position No.1 vibration damper and slipper for the No.1 timing chain tensioner after setting down the crankshaft timing sprocket followed by installation of No.1 timing chain with camshaft timing sprocket before securing the chain using cord. Start by mounting the timing chain cover with new gaskets then proceed to put on the crankshaft pulley through SST (09213-54015, 09330-00021) followed by No.3 and No.2 crankshaft pulleys. Affix the oil strainer to the installation using a fresh gasket and install the oil pan with a correct torque procedure while adding seal packing (Part No. 08826 00080). The engine obtains the flywheel housing under cover together with its dust seal followed by the installation of stiffener plates for 2WD. After installing a fresh O-ring on the crankshaft position sensor, workers must add the generator and adjusting bar along with bracket and A/C compressor before installing the bracket. The installation process concludes with putting the cylinder head assembly at its spot along with water pump pulley, fan with fluid coupling and generator drive belt. Engine oil filling follows before starting the engine to detect any fluid leakage and afterwards replacing the under cover with final inspections of vehicle performance during a road examination.
