2000 Toyota Solara Power Steering Pump Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to service and repair the Power Steering Pump on 2000 Toyota Solara?
A: You must approach the Power Steering Pump disassembly with caution because vise tightening should be avoided. Check the PS vane pump rotating torque that should be below 0.3 Nm (2.8 kgf-cm, 2.4 inch lbs.) without any irregular noise during smooth operation. Use Special Service Tool: 09960-10010 (09962-01000, 09963-01000) to cease the pulley rotation before your removal of the pulley nut. Next, separate the front and rear brackets by pulling out 3 bolts and 2 nuts while you should then detach both the suction port union with its O-ring. Proceed to remove the pressure port union and flow control valve and spring and their necessary O-ring. Remove four housing bolts and two O-rings as a first step until you can separate the wave washer and side plate with gasket while also extracting the cam ring and vane plates, rotor, and taking attention to keep all components safe from falling. The service technician separates the front housing vane pump shaft from its two straight pins. A proper inspection demands measurement of the vane pump shaft oil clearance against the bushing using micrometric and calipertic instruments to maintain standard values between 0.03 - 0.05 mm (0.00 12 - 0.0020 inch) while staying below the maximum limit of 0.07 mm (0.0028 inch). The inspection of vane plates and rotor for height must exceed 8.6 mm (0.339 inch) while thickness must surpass 1.397 mm (0.0550 inch) and length must exceed 14.991 mm (0.5902 inch) simultaneously. The maximum allowable clearance between the rotor groove and plate should not reach 0.035 mm (0.0014 inch). The flow control valve inspection requires power steering fluid application followed by a check for proper valve hole entry and compressed air leak testing; install a new valve if needed with markings A through F. The spring free length measurement should be at minimum 32.3 mm (1.272 inch) before replacing it when out of specification. Repaying with a screwdriver taped in vinyl will safely remove the oil seal while Special Service Tool: 09950-60010 (09951-00330), 09950-70010 (09951-07100) should be used for fitting in a fresh oil seal with power steering fluid application to its lip. Proper orientation must be maintained. Begin reassembly by applying power steering fluid to specified components and subsequently install the vane pump shaft along with the straight pins without causing damage to them. First install the cam ring in its proper position while facing outward toward the rear housing. Afterward place the vane pump rotor together with a new snap ring. Arrange the 10 vane plates so their round areas face the outside while adding a new gasket and side plate which should have their holes matched with straight pins. The wave washer installation requires proper slot insertion into the side plate before applying power steering fluid to new O-rings. Then install the O-rings into the rear housing and lock it with four bolts reaching 17 Nm (170 kgf-cm, 12 ft. lbs.). Credit the pressure port union with power steering fluid before tightening its components to 83 Nm (850 kgf-cm, 62 ft. lbs.). The flow control valve and spring must face the right direction according to installation specifications. Install the suction port union using a new O-ring then a bolt tightened to 13 Nm (130 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.) followed by the front and rear brackets fastened with 3 bolts and 2 nuts at 43 Nm (440 kgf-cm, 32 ft. lbs.). Install the vane pump pulley followed by torquing its nut to 43 Nm while controlling its rotation using Special Service Tool: 09960-10010 (09962-01000, 09963-01000) before another PS vane pump rotating torque measurement.
