2000 Toyota RAV4 Axle Shaft Parts Q&A
Q: How to remove and install the axle shaft on 2000 Toyota RAV4?
A: The procedure to replace an axle shaft for all standard-wheel-drive M/T and A/T and 4WD requires Special Service Tool: 09608-16042 (09608-02021, 09608-02041) to support the hub bearing before vehicle weight can be applied. When working on drive shafts which have ABS you must handle the disconnection from the axle hub with caution to protect the ABS speed sensor rotor. Start the procedure with wheel front removal at 103 Nm torque followed by under engine cover removal and it ends with drain of gear oil for M/T or ATF for A/T. The bolt along with ABS speed sensor must be taken out of the vehicle (Torque: 7.8 Nm). Begin by removing the lock cap alongside the lock nut and cotter pin (216 Nm Torque). Then disconnect the tie rod end from the steering knuckle and stabilize the bar link from the lower suspension arm (2 Door requires 44 Nm Torque but 4 Door and all over fender vehicles need 74 Nm Torque). A plastic hammer should be used to disconnect the lower ball joint from the lower suspension arm and the drive shaft from the axle hub but must avoid damaging either the inner oil seal or ABS speed sensor rotor. Extract the drive shaft from 2WD (M/T) RH by removing the center bearing bracket snap ring and the bolt (Torque: 32 Nm) until the drive shaft with center drive shaft can be taken out. Remove the two bolts of the center bearing bracket from 2WD (A/T) RH to extract the drive shaft with its center bearing case (Torque: 64 Nm). The drive shaft removal process for 2WD LH and 4WD requires Special Service Tool: 09520-01010, 09520-24010 (09520-32040) to eliminate the drive shaft followed by snap ring removal. Installation follows the steps of removal then check both ABS speed sensor output and front wheel alignment after completing the installation process. Apply MP grease to the oil seal lip while maintaining the snap ring opening toward the bottom of the drive shaft until installation as well as checking 2 - 3 mm of axial play alongside manual drive shaft extraction resistance.
