2000 Toyota Land Cruiser Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service the thermostat on 2000 Toyota Land Cruiser?
A: Draining engine coolant must be the first step before servicing the thermostat. You must separate the water inlet from the water inlet housing after removing three nuts from it. Remove the thermostat while taking away its gasket from the system. The water test can determine if the thermostat opens correctly between 80 - 84 degrees Celsius (176 - 183 degrees Fahrenheit). If it does not meet this requirement, then you need to replace the thermostat. A replacement should be considered for the thermostat if its valve lift measurement falls short of 10 mm (0.39 inch) at 95 degrees Celsius (203 degrees Fahrenheit). A thermostat needs replacement when its valve remains open below 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) testing temperature. When installing the thermostat users must first secure a new gasket onto it before inserting the device into the water inlet housing so that the jiggle valve faces upward straight while remaining within 30 degrees of the recommended orientation on either side of the proper position. Use the 3 nuts to install the water inlet while torquing them to 19 Nm (195 kgf cm, 14 ft. lbs.). The procedure requires adding engine coolant to the system followed by engine start-up for leak inspection then another engine coolant check.
