2000 Toyota Echo Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to service and repair the starter motor on 2000 Toyota Echo?
A: The starter motor repair process starts with removing all its components for service purposes. Starting by disconnecting the lead wire from the terminal after removing the two housing bolts securing the starter switch allows you to lift the switch part to free the plunger hook from the drive lever. Begin by removing the two through bolts to pull out both field frame and armature in sequence while extracting the O-ring from the field frame. Brush holder maintenance begins with removing two screws and their matching end cover and then taking out the O-ring followed by disconnecting the brush holder through screwdriver-guided manipulations of the spring before extracting the four brushes. Extract the armature from the field frame before removing the drive lever and the combination of starter clutch with shock absorber from the starter housing. Start by removing the plate together with three gears and one plate washer from the planetary gears. The planetary carrier shaft starts by pressing the stop collar forward until the snap ring starts to release. Then remove the stop collar together with the starter clutch from the shaft. First remove the planetary carrier shaft's snap ring as well as plate washer using snap ring pliers before pulling out the shaft while aligning the hollow of the internal gear with the shock absorber protrusion. The reassembly procedure requires high temperature-resistant grease for bearing and sliding part lubrication. Insert and rotate the internal gear first before installing the planetary carrier shaft. Apply grease to both components before inserting the internal gear against the shock absorber. Place the planetary carrier shaft before attaching it with a plate washer along with the snap ring. The next stage involves placing the starter clutch on its shaft after applying grease to both bushing and spline components and using a snap ring for attachment. The planetary gears require grease application before both the flange pins and plate installation. After proper alignment the plate can be easily placed. Install the drive lever and starter clutch with shock absorber while applying grease to the drive lever including proper alignment to the shock absorber. Position the armature into the field frame followed by installing the brush holder through brush connection and by using a new O-ring and end cover that requires 1.5 Nm (15 kg.cm, 13 in.lb) torque. Place the field frame and armature assembly onto the shock absorber by mixing a new O-ring with it then fasten it through two bolts torqued to 5.9 Nm (60 kg.cm, 52 in.lb). The magnetic switch installation process involves attaching the plunger to the drive lever using two nuts at 8.3 Nm torque (85 kg.cm, 73 in.lb) while connecting the lead wire to the terminal and torquing its nut at 9.8 Nm (100 kg.cm, 87 in.lb).
