2000 Toyota 4Runner Alternator Parts Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair an Alternator on 2000 Toyota 4Runner?
A: Before servicing the generator you must remove the rear end cover by unfastening the nut combined with terminal insulator then the bolt and 3 nuts and plate terminal as well as end cover. detach the brush holder and voltage regulator through the steps of brushing away the brush holder cover and undoing the brush holder screws as well as unfastening the seat plate from the rectifier end frame. First remove the voltage regulator through screw removal of the 3 screws and detach the rectifier holder using 4 screws that need to be unscrewed along with the 4 rubber insulators. Use the pulley holding tool (Special Service Tool 09820-63010) attached with a torque wrench to fix the socket in a clockwise direction to 39 Nm (400 kgf.cm, 29 ft.lbf) while maintaining the tool in contact with the rotor shaft. Mount the adapter into a vise then begin attaching the socket while untightening the pulley nut counterclockwise but limit the rotation to half a turn to keep from harming the rotor shaft. Begin by removing the generator from the adapter and follow with the pulley holding tool socket then finish by taking off the rectifier end frame through its 4 nut removal using Special Service Tool 0928-46011. Reassembly starts with attaching the drive end frame onto the pulley followed by inserting the rotor and then the rectifier end frame which needs pressing with a 29 mm socket wrench and subsequent nut installation at 4.5 Nm torque (46 kg.cm, 40 in.lb). Begin hand-tightening the pulley nut after which you should torque the pulley to 111 Nm (1,132 kg.cm, 82 ft.lb) utilizing the pulley holding tool in a clockwise direction. Before installing the rectifier holder with 4 rubber insulators, verify the correct direction of orientation then place the rectifier and tighten 4 screws to 2.94 Nm (30 kg.cm, 26 in.lb). Begin by mounting the seal plate to the rectifier frame followed by the voltage controller and brush holder using 5 screws that receive torques at 1.96 Nm (20 kg.cm, 17 in.lb) before capping the brush holder. The assembly process ends with attaching the rear end cover through end cover and plate terminal bolted with 3 nuts which require a torque setting of 3.85 Nm (39 kg.cm, 34 in.lb) for the bolt and 4.4 Nm (46 kg.cm, 39 in.lb) for the nuts. Afterward, insert the terminal insulator and tighten the nut to 4.1 Nm (41.5 kg.cm, 36 in.lb). Ensure the rotor moves without any obstacles during its rotational motion.
