    Q:
How do you overhaul the rear coil spring on Toyota Matrix? Posted by Customer
    A:
The overhaul process for the rear coil spring requires removal of the rear wheel followed by deck board No.2 and deck board sub-assembly and deck floor box rear and luggage compartment tray followed by the shock absorber head cover. The jack should support the rear axle beam assembly while the two nuts and bolt are removed to detach the rear shock absorber with coil spring. When using Service Tool 09727-30021 to compress the coil spring rear LH component you must prevent impact wrench usage because it could harm the tool. Using a 6 mm hexagon wrench to hold the piston rod allows you to remove the nut for taking out the rear shock absorber cushion washer No.1 along with rear suspension support and rear spring front bracket sub-assembly LH. Finish the process by removing the LH support assembly rear suspension and rear coil spring insulator upper LH as well as rear spring bumper No.1 LH and coil spring rear LH. The shock absorber assembly rear LH requires inspection by extending and compressing the rod to confirm normal behavior and sounds; the component needs replacement if problems are found. Insert the lower end of the rear shock absorber assembly LH into the lower seat gap of the spring after using the same special service tool to compress the coil spring rear LH again. The rear spring bumper No.1 LH and LH support assembly rear suspension should be installed first before setting the rear coil spring insulator upper LH to the rear spring front bracket sub-assembly LH while ensuring correct assembly placement. Install the rear suspension support along with rear shock absorber cushion washer No.1, but use a new center nut first before removing the special service tool to check the rear spring front bracket sub-assembly LH direction. Then fasten the nut to a torque of 56 Nm (571 kgf-cm, 41 ft. lbs.) using the 6 mm hexagon wrench. First install the rear shock absorber with coil spring by securing it with two nuts and a bolt to a torque of 80 Nm. Afterward tighten the nut and rear shock absorber LH cushion retainer. The installation order includes placing the luggage compartment tray followed by the deck board sub-assembly and then deck board No.2 and finally deck floor box rear and shock absorber head cover. The suspension needs stabilization by installing the rear wheel followed by vehicle lowering and 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.) tightness before bouncing the vehicle to stabilize it. The rear shock absorber with coil spring nut needs complete tightening to 80 Nm (816 kgf-cm, 59 ft. lbs.) then check the rear wheel alignment. The shock absorber assembly rear LH requires proper disposal by extending the shock absorber rod then drilling a hole into the cylinder to release gas contents while users maintain safety from flying debris and recognize the gas has no color, smell or toxic quality.
