    Q:
How to service and repair the power steering pump on Toyota Highlander? Posted by Customer
    A:
Begin service and repair of the power steering pump by taking away the front wheel on the right-hand side followed by power steering fluid drainage and removal of the right-hand front fender apron seal. Begin services by removing the fan and generator V belt through SST 09249-63010 while using the same tool to disconnect the oil reservoir to pump hose No. 1 where you will need to remove the clip to avoid any fluid spillage on the V belt. The pressure feed tube assembly disconnects when you secure the pressure port union with a 27 mm wrench to extract the union bolt alongside the gasket. Start by disconnecting the vane pump assembly connector from the oil pressure switch before you loosen bolt A using SST 09249-63010 and a 14 mm deep socket wrench and remove bolt B. The vane pump assembly should be clamped in a vise with SST 09630-00014 (09631-00132) before removing the power steering suction port union while removing its bolt and O-ring. After unbolting the pressure port union and its O-ring proceed to remove the flow control valve and compression spring. The replacement of the oil pressure switch becomes necessary after its detected damage. Unscrew the 4 housing rear bolts while also removing the O-ring before you can extract the vane pump housing rear. You should extract the snap ring using two screwdrivers from the w/pulley shaft sub-assembly before removing the sub-assembly. Start by extracting the vane pump plates (10 pieces) and rotor together with the vane pump cam ring and front side plate maintaining O-ring removal from both the side plate front and housing front. A screwdriver should be used to carefully extract the housing oil seal yet maintain intactness of the housing front. A micrometer alongside caliper gauge must measure the vane pump shaft oil clearance which needs to stay below 0.07 mm (0.0028 inch). Measure the vane pump plates for a thickness of between 1.405 to 1.411 mm (0.05531 to 0.05555 inch) while ensuring the vane pump rotor groove clearance with vane plates remains less than 0.03 mm (0.0012 inch). Power steering fluid should be applied to the flow control valve to help it settle inside its host opening. Buyers must replace the vane pump assembly when the valve does not fit correctly. Pay attention to leakage by deploying compressed air onto the flow control valve then verify no air escapes from the end holes. The free length measurement of the compression spring needs to be at least 30.3 mm (1.193 inch) otherwise discard the vane pump assembly. Check the pressure port union to detect any damage that would trigger fluid leakage. The installation process requires a new housing oil seal that needs power steering fluid treatment using SST 09950-60010 (09951-00280) or 09950-70010 (09951-07100) and should face the proper orientation. The w/pulley shaft sub-assembly must enter gradually through the pulley opening to prevent damage of the oil seal lip. Perform this operation on the side plate front using new O-rings which have received power steering fluid coating while maintaining proper alignment. Placing the cam ring with the inscribed mark up first then adding the vane pump rotor along with plates while maintaining the round ends pointed outward. The housing rear must receive a new O-ring treated with power steering fluid before placement onto its location and subsequent adjustment through 4 bolts applied at 22 Nm (224 kgf-cm, 16 ft. lbs.). To check the pump preload measure its smooth operation without noise while using a specified service bolt and examine the pulley rotating torque which should not exceed 0.27 Nm (2.8 kgf-cm, 2.4 inch lbs.). Thread the oil pressure switch with a new O-ring consisting of power steering fluid until achieving 21 Nm (214 kgf-cm, 15 ft. lbs.) torque followed by the flow control valve along with compression spring before placing the pressure port union that requires a fresh O-ring at 69 Nm (704 kgf-cm, 51 ft. lbs.). The final step is to connect the power steering suction port union featuring a new O-ring by tightening a bolt to 12 Nm (122 kgf-cm, 9 ft. lbs.). After that, install the vane pump assembly which requires tightness of bolt A (temporary) followed by bolt B to 37 Nm (377 kgf-cm, 27 ft. lbs.) and final tightening of bolt A to 26 Nm (264 kgf-cm, 19 ft. lbs.) using SST 09249-63010. Use a new gasket to join the pressure feed tube assembly while making sure the stopper rests against the housing front before torquing the union bolt to 52 Nm (525 kgf-cm, 38 ft. lbs.). Following the hose connection of the oil reservoir to pump hose No. 1, install the fan and generator V belt with SST 09249-63010 followed by front fender apron seal RH and front wheel RH installation at 103 Nm (1,050 kgf-cm, 76 ft. lbs.). Then perform power steering fluid bleeding before leak inspection.
