    Q:
How to service and repair the drive shaft on Toyota RAV4? Posted by Customer
    A:
Start drive/propeller shaft servicing by loosely turning the cross groove joint set bolts half a turn with a hexagon wrench while simultaneously holding down the brake pedal. The cross groove joint cover requires a cloth to isolate the boot area before you can ease the two center support bearing bolts. Before separating the propeller shaft from the differential, you should put matchmarks on the flange of both the propeller shaft and the differential companion flange. The removal of two bolts and two plate washers with the center support bearing allows extraction of the propeller shaft from the transaxle while Special Service Tool: 09325-20010 inserted into the transaxle prevents oil leakage. When disconnecting the intermediate shaft and rear propeller shaft first apply matchmarks to the cross groove joint and universal joint flange before removing six bolts and three washers by using a hexagon wrench. Dial indicator runs on both intermediate and rear propeller shafts should be less than 0.8 mm (0.031 inch) while excessive runouts require immediate replacement. Examine universal joint flange runout while monitoring both horizontal and vertical directions since each direction should not exceed 0.1 mm (0.004 inch). The spider bearing should be checked for axial movement while the cross-groove joint needs to rotate without grease leakage or damage. To access the center support bearing one must use a hammer and a chisel to unstake the nut before using a vise to remove it together with the plate washer. Apply matchmarks on the universal joint flange and intermediate shaft before using Special Service Tool: 09950-40011 (09951-04020, 09952-04010, 09953-04030, 09954-04010, 09955-04061, 09958-04011) to remove the flange. Check bearing rotation and assess the bearing seals after removing the center support bearing and plate washer and conduct a replacement if needed. Use the provided tools to install the center support bearing by pressing it into position while aligning the matchmarks between the universal joint flange and intermediate shaft. Then apply a new nut and washer before torquing to 181 Nm (1,850 kgf-cm, 134 ft. lbs.) followed by retorquing to 69 Nm (700 kgf-cm, 51 ft. lbs.) before staking the nut. You must first detach the old dust cover using a screwdriver and hammer before inserting the new dust cover through Special Service Tool: 09226-10010 while executing gentle movements. During installation, position the intermediate shaft next to the rear propeller shaft then align their matchmarks before installing three washers and six bolts which require temporary hexagon wrench tightening. Drive Special Service Tool: 09325-20010 out of the transaxle before putting the yoke within the transaxle. The center support bearing goes first then the propeller shaft flange matches the differential companion flange on their marks while attaching the shaft with washers, four bolts and nuts that you tighten to 74 Nm (750 kgf-cm, 54 ft. lbs.). End the procedure by holding the brake pedal to torque cross groove joint set bolts to 27 Nm while checking that bracket center lines face shaft axials perpendicular to the direction.
